What is mental health and wellbeing?

"Mental health is a state of wellbeing in which the individual realises their own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to contribute to his or her own community.”

                                                                               World Health Organisation

Mental health is just as important as physical health.  Mental health is about our emotional, psychological, and social wellbeing.  It’s how we think, feel and develop relationships.

Positive mental health includes the ability to cope with day to day stressors, feeling a sense of competence, being connected with others, while also feeling valued and capable of contributing to the community.

There are many ways we can encourage positive mental health and wellbeing in your loved one’s day to day life.  Here are some good examples:

  • Keep active with regular exercise

  • Spend time with those they love and trust

  • Reduce alcohol

  • Express their feelings regularly

  • Eat a nutritional diet

  • Get a minimum 8 hours sleep a day

  • Find hobbies they enjoy

  • Avoid illicit drugs
